Tan-Torres ready to quit BIR post

Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Joel Tan-Torres said on Monday he will quit his post if the incoming administration no longer needs his services."Like all other presidential appointees, I, too, serve at the pleasure of the President and I will not cling to my position if the appointing power wants to replace me," said Tan-Torres.The revenue chief issued the statement after some sectors in and out of the government perceive to be close to President-elect Benigno Aquino III are lobbying for the appointment of their favorites to the top revenue post.This, even as several economic and finance experts sought the extension of Tan-Torres' term at least up to the end of the year to sustain the BIR's momentum in its tax collection campaign.Records showed that the BIR raised P265 billion during the first four months of the year which was P21 billion higher than the collection target for the period.In April, P91.2 billion was collected, up by P4.7 billion than the target for the month.Tan-Torres said he can always return to the private sector if the next administration does not extend his term.
